FORMER Limerick county councillor Patrick C Fitzgerald is calling for Shannon Airport to be established as an aviation hub following the recent approach by Willie Walsh of British Airways (IAG) to purchase Aer Lingus. Mr Fitzgerald believes it is important that the Mid-West ensures that Shannon Airport remains as an aviation hub able to compete with the major players in the aviation industry and ensure that Shannon Airport will have a major place in Transatlantic, UK and European travel. “With 40 million Irish Diaspora in the United States and 20 million in the UK, it is important that the counties serviced by Shannon Airport put their shoulders to the wheel,” said Mr Fitzgerald.
