FINE Gael councillor Stephen Keary has issued a road safety warning to motorists using the R518 Rathkeale to Askeaton road near Graigeen Cross to take extreme care at the level crossing railway gates.
Iarnrod Eireann has constructed what Cllr Keary described as a “lethal ramp”, approximately 75mm high, over the road level.
“I have been contacted by a number of concerned drivers about this ramp. This has the potential to cause a very serious or fatal accident,” he warned.
“I am extremely surprised at Iarnrod Eireann who have very high standards of rail safety that they would take it upon themselves to put road users at risk at this disused level crossing,” he added.
Cllr Keary photographed the road earlier this week and there were no signs to warn drivers of the potential hazard. He is currently working with Limerick City and County Council to rectify the issue and has stated that if this is not resolved immediately he will be contacting Transport Minister Paschal Donoghue.
A spokeswoman for the local authority said they contacted Irish Rail on Tuesday and a meeting was arranged for Wednesday. In the meantime, the Council erected signage and lighting to warn motorists approaching the level crossing.”
At the meeting on Wednesday morning, Irish Rail confirmed that works will be carried out to rectify the issue.
