A ceremony unveiling a plaque to late Limerick poet Desmond O’Grady will take place at The White House Bar, O’Connell Street tomorrow, Tuesday 24 at 11.30am. President Michael D Higgins, friend to and admirer of O’Grady, will officiate at this 2nd in a series of 10 planned plaques that will ultimately create a Literary Trail of the city.

A documentary on the life of Desmond O’Grady will be shown, and there will be a number of short readings by students from the University of Limerick. A presentation will also be made to President Higgins, and members of family will also be present for the occasion.

Speaking in advance of the honour organised by Limerick  Writers Centre, President Higgins defined O’Grady as “one of Ireland’s best known poets who was deeply committed to his work which had rightly received international attention. From wherever he was writing, be it Cairo or Kinsale, his work invoked a sense of what was Irish in both heritage and contemporary life.
