A TEENAGE boy went on the run after escaping from security staff who were bringing him to Limerick children’s court on Tuesday.
The 15-year-old, who was in the custody of officers from the Oberstown remand school, made his escape when they opened the door of the custody vehicle outside the courthouse.
The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was serving a period of detention at the county Dublin facility and was summonsed to appear at the children’s court on a number of other charges for which Judge Mary Larkin was due impose sentence.
He had previously pleaded guilty to a number of offences including the theft of pedal cycles, interfering with a car, criminal damage and the theft of two cars over a four month period at the end of 2014.
The Director of Public Prosecutions was also due to give her directions on a number of other serious charges including two counts of burglary and possession of a knife when arrested by Gardaí.
When he sought bail at a previous sitting of the court, the boy said that he would not abide by any of the conditions set down by the judge.
However, he was subsequently released on bail after the court was told there was no bed available at Oberstown.
He was arrested 36 hours later after he breached the conditions of his bail and was detained at Oberstown until his transfer to Limerick on Tuesday .
After she was told of his escape from the court precincts, Judge Larkin issued a bench warrant for his immediate arrest and return to custody.
