AN unusual meeting of Sean Nós great Iarla O’Lionaird, soprano Katherine Buzard and Princeton University Orchestra will grace the concert hall stage on Monday January 26, 8pm. The programme will embrace classical majesty and Irish intimacy, orchestrated by this huge ensemble.
Dating since 1896, up to 100 undergraduates make up this volunteer orchestra which performs up to 15 concerts annually on campus, and tours.
In April 2001, the Orchestra appeared in Lincoln Center for a special performance. ‘Beethoven and Homer, The Heroic Moment’, a programme which combined the ‘Fifth Symphony’ of Beethoven and Professor Robert Fagles reading from his translation of ‘The Iliad’ and ‘The Odyssey’.
Princeton University Orchestra has represented this Ivy League college on tours of the United States and European cities. Graduates have gone on to be performers, music teachers, and arts administrators, but the list of professions is of course, impressive.
What’s on the Limerick programme? Mahler’s ‘Symphony No. 4 in G Major, Dvorak’s ‘Carnival Overture’ and four Sean Nós songs arranged variously by Donnacha Dennehy and Dan Trueman.
Book on www.uch.ie and note that the concert hall is offering a discount deal if ‘The King’s Singers’ on February 4 are booked also.
