THE HSE has appealed to the public to only come to the hospital’s emergency department if there is a real emergency or there is no other way to get treatment.
The appeal come in a week when on one day alone there were 41 people on trolleys in the University Hospital in Dooradoyle and a record 600 plus in hospitals nationwide.
And as nurses ballot for industrial action on the issue, the Irish Nurses and Midwives organisation has said that as many as 70 positions need to be filled at the hospital.
According to INMO Limerick representative Mary Fogarty, that is how many positions are needed and other factors need to come into play, she said.
“These are dangerous levels of overcrowding. The HSE have to start managing the hospital and not let it get to 120 per cent capacity,:” she said.
