TWO females have been dramatically rescued from the River Shannon by rescue swimmers in separate incidents this Sunday evening.
Shortly after 6.30pm, the alarm was raised after a woman was reported to have entered the water at Howley’s Quay and two tenders from the Limerick City and County Fire and Rescue Service were deployed to the scene where the woman was spotted floating.
The female was taken from the water and was initially treated at the quayside before being taken to the University Hospital Limerick.
Meantime, two more fire tenders were deployed downstream of the Shannon Bridge to where the new jet boat is moored and the it was there at Steamboat Quay that a second woman was seen in the water.
Swift water technicians attached to the Fire and Rescue service were able to save the other woman before she was taken ashore and also treated. She too was also brought to hospital.
Members of An Garda Siochana, ambulance paramedics as well as members of the Irish Coast Guard with Rescue 115, the Shannon based helicopter, were also in attendance.
Separately, Limerick Marine Search and Rescue reported on their facebook page this Sunday that they were called out to two other incidents earlier in the day.
According to the post, “Limerick Marine Search and Rescue Service was paged this morning by the Coast Guard to two incidents – the first, a boat in difficulty on the Abbey River which was towed to St Michael’s RC slipway and the second call was a kayaker in difficulty at Curragower Falls”.
