Limerick RAW exhibition shows photography at its purest

dromore lake_tim humphries‘RAW’, AN exhibition by printmaker Tim Humpries of photography from landscapes in Ireland and across the world, is open for viewing at 51 O’Connell Street in Limerick city after launching on Monday evening.

The images, which can be seen daily until Sunday December 14 from 1pm to 6pm, are the culmination of a project which Tim has been working on since 2003 and all of the images are pure in that there are no digital enhancements.

They reflect Tim’s interests in cartography, navigating with maps, astrological events and light conditions dictated by natural or man-made events. He explained that a lot of planning goes into photographs, with a sharp sense of timing being crucial to capturing the perfect image.

“Many of them are planned, sometimes even a year in advance when I know that there’s a particular event or season coming around. I’m looking for a particular shot, so I have reminders on my phone pinging on a regular basis to try and organise myself to get to a particular location for a particular event.

“I have a reminder on my phone going for the last two years for a derelict house in Gort. There are lovely trees growing out through the windows so I’m waiting on a nice, frosty morning to get up there and get the shot, but unfortunately the weather has been playing against me in the last couple of years.”

Tim works as a printmaker, although he became more involved in photography in 2006 when work and family commitments impacted upon the amount of time he was able to devote to printmaking. However, he outlined that he has continued to make prints throughout that time.

“I didn’t have the time to devote to printmaking because it’s a very time-consuming process, whereas photography is a lot more immediate. I focused on photography and as the images themselves started to get more competent in their own right, I decided that this was the direction I was going to take for the time being.

“I have printmaking works that I will be working on this week, so it’s always something that I’d be interested in doing. I’m still a printmaker and that will never change.”

All of Tim’s work are on sale at the RAW exhibition in 51 O’Connell Street until Sunday December 14.
