RORY Gaffney, Limerick FC’s top scorer in 2014 with 14 league goals, has left the club to join English League 2 side Cambridge United.
The transfer was confirmed on Tuesday evening and brings an end to the Galwegian’s three and a half year involvement with Limerick, whom he helped to promotion in 2012 and two mid-table finishes in the Premier Division since joining the Super Blues from Mervue United in the summer of 2011.
Speaking to LimerickFC.ie, Gaffney said: “I’ve had a wonderful three and a half years with Limerick FC but I’ve always wanted to experience playing cross channel and I am delighted that I am now joining Cambridge United and fulfilling this goal.
“I would like to thank all at Limerick FC, the chairman, staff, fans and my fellow players who have supported me throughout my time at the club and helped me develop as a player. I wish the club continued success in the future.”
Limerick manager Martin Russell added: “I want to wish Rory all the best with his move and I’m sure he will be a huge success with Cambridge. I want to thank him not only for the goals he scored for Limerick but his commitment and professionalism.”
Chairman Pat O’Sullivan also paid a few words of tribute to the Cambridge-bound Gaffney, saying: “Since Rory joined us from Mervue he has improved year in, year out. Credit has to be paid to Mervue also for the hugely important role they played in his development. As a club we are delighted that we have helped him progress even further.
“While the fans may be disappointed he is leaving us, I am sure they will agree it’s a wonderful opportunity for Rory and we will continue to support him from afar with his new club. Since the day he arrived down from Galway, Rory has been a hardworking and dedicated player and these qualities will stand him in good stead as he continues his career in England.”
