PULSE 11 continues for the next three Friday or Saturday nights at Red Cross Hall, No. 36 Cecil Street at 8pm. This series of c.30 minute ‘read-only’ new works are fragments of what could be developed into full theatre works as part of City of Culture’s Legacy policy.
This Friday November 21, Maeve Stone directs a piece called ‘Limbo’, to do with the plight of asylum seekers in direct provision in Ireland. With dancer Angie Smalis and musician Rory Grubb, it fuses movement and live music: “We begin to trace the snakes and ladders of a story so close, it’s nearly impossible to see”.

Note from the creator, Maeve Stone:

“I’m interested in making this piece, Limbo, for a number of reasons.
“Firstly I feel that now is a pregnant moment to join the conversation: Protests at centres, increasing media coverage and the government’s move to form a working group to begin discussing reform make this an issue that deserves immediate attention.
“Secondly I think direct provision is of particular significance in Limerick. Mount Trenchard in Foynes, widely criticised for its conditions, was recently described by one of its inhabitants as being “like an open prison”, is this neglect of vulnerable people something we can accept as part of our society?
“Thirdly I see it as an artistic challenge to look for the best way to create a human, non-didactic, engaging way of presenting difficult material. I’m curious about the ways in which we relate to information and the ways we communicate with each other.
“I’m putting the audience at the heart of this work and asking myself how do you make the invisible visible?”
