LIMERICK City and County Council has granted permission for the first phase of the €16.8 million redevelopment of Colbert Station, which includes the creation of a new public plaza.

Phase one of the project will also see the removal of the existing car park area and the demolition of the derelict petrol station and council depot next to the station.

A new taxi rank and car set down area will be developed to the front of the station building, and there will be parking for 326 cars and 264 bicycles.

A new bus station is proposed to the northern side of the station.

The local authority has attached 18 conditions to the planning permission.

The redevelopment plans, which were initially announced by the then Public Transport Minister Alan Kelly in May, were prepared by Iarnrod Éireann in collaboration with Bus Éireann, Limerick City and County Council and the National Transport Authority.
