MORE goings on for November 5, county fare this time out, to rival three city based concerts: Simon and Garfunkel Story at UCH, Jacob Deaton jazz trio in Dolan’s and for lunchtime leisure, St Mary’s Cathedral’s weekly open house recital. Head south for a change, where Friars’ Gate Theatre in Kilmallock is host to writer Colin Barrett this Wednesday as part of City of Culture’s Visiting Writers programme.

Barrett was born in 1982 and grew up in Mayo. In 2009 he completed his MA in Creative Writing at University College Dublin and was awarded the Penguin Ireland Prize.
His work has been published in The Stinging Fly magazine and in the anthologies, Sharp Sticks, Driven Nails (Stinging Fly Press, 2010) and Town and Country (Faber and Faber, 2013).
His first collection Young Skins won the 2014 Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award.

Colin Barrett was also the winner of the 2014 Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. Admission free to his reading from 11am to 12.30pm in Kilmallock.

Again next Wednesday 5 but at 8pm, diarist Michael Harding leads in the first of 2015’s Soulscapes series of explorations by solo artists. His session is described as ‘Hanging with the Elephants’ – title of his new book – and bear in mind his Tuesday column in The Irish Times lead to the best selling ‘Staring at Lakes’.
Book in advance at www.friarsgate.ie for either event.
