IRISH Chamber Orchestra looks forward to welcoming back virtuoso violinist Anthony Marwood for exciting performances at the RDS Concert Hall, Dublin on Thursday October 16 and here at University Concert Hall, Plassey on Friday 17.
We hear from the orchestra that “Marwood has a calm approach to his music, bringing passion without frenzy and is much loved by audiences for his golden sound and the effortlessly conveyed emotion in his music”.
Bach’s great masterworks, the Brandenburg Concertos, are vivid pieces of music. The soloists for these concerts are Daniel Bates on oboe and Laoise O’Brien, recorder, as with Kamala Bain.
The lively 4th Concerto was written for violin and two recorders with string orchestra. Marwood showcases his violin skill alongside the unusual timbre of O’Brien and Bain.
Bach cherished the versatility of the oboe and often used it to accompany his emotive music.
His Concerto for Violin & Oboe in D minor survives only in a version for two harpsichords.
However the original oboe and violin lines are easily identifiable from the keyboard parts and are more commonly performed.
“The ICO accompanies, providing the backdrop against which oboist Dan Bates and violinist Anthony Marwood project their beautifully choreographed echoes right back to the main theme,” observes orchestra marketing manager Charlotte Eglington.
Finally, Marwood’s own arrangement of Enescu’s powerful Octet Op.7 is a gutsy work, guaranteed to bring the house down. It combines the musical language of the late romantic era with polyphony.
