Moyross celebrates its Limerick connections

MOYROSS CENTRE FAS NATIONAL WINNERMORE than 500 people have found employment through the Moyross Community Enterprise Centre (MCEC) since its establishment in 1992, according to a new report documenting its history.

And the community benefits derived from the centre are highlighted by the fact that an estimated 20,000 hours have been given by volunteers running the weekly bingo at the centre over the past 22 years.

The report written by Stephen Rourke, following six months of research with voluntary board members, staff and members of the local community, was launched by Education Minister Jan O’Sullivan as part of the celebrations to document the centre’s achievements and the services it provides.

Since opening over two decades ago, the centre has provided information and services for over 9,000 people annually. It also maintains 29 acres including sports pitches and children’s playground.

“Moyross people have been busily involved in developing the community facilities and we’re grateful to outside agencies who have worked hard with us down through all the years,” said Enterprise Centre chairperson Geraldine Clohessy.

Limerick City and County Council chief executive Conn Murray, commented, “MCEC along with other local organisations has also helped retain a strong sense of community throughout Moyross, particularly during difficult periods.”

“Thriving local communities such as those in Moyross are critically important to the overall economic, social and environmental development of Limerick,” he added.
