THE third annual architectural festival, OpenHouseLimerick (OHL) unfolds October weekend 3-5. Supported by Limerick City and Couty Council, the idea is to encourage the public to interact with and learn about our built environment. Lectures, tours, events, surprises inform the three days.
This OpenHouse event places Limerick in an international family of participants along with New York, Helsinki, London, Melbourn, Slovenia and of course, Dublin.
Reference the full page programme in Limerick Post this week 27.09.14, page 33 and note the variety of venues and institutions welcoming our exploration. Ardnacrusha Power Station, Limerick Sailor’s Home on O’Curry STreet, Fox’s Bow for ‘Particles or Waves?’ art project and Abington Church out in Murroe are examples that intrigue.
It’s all free and this year’s programme expands into the county with the “contemporary and innovative Cappamore Library and Art Studios”.
In the city, the organisers tease with the expectation of laying the curse of St Munchin (look it up) to rest “through cathartic rites of song, music and performance”. This Waking of St Munchin takes place opening night, Friday October 3 at Dance Limerick, St John’s Church in John’s Square. Bring your courage.

Over the weekend, at least 40 buildings of all types and periods are open to explore.
