Support for Limerick women dealing with separation

Can-Consider-Divorce-Separation-Marriage-as-a-Solution-to-ProblemsA LIMERICK support group for men separated from their families has extended its operation to include women trying to cope with issues ranging from financial worries, stress and isolation.

The group formerly known as MILES has changed its name to FAMILES and offers support to people coping with the effects of a relationship breakdown or who are separating from their family. The first support meeting for women was held at the group’s new permanent base at 291, Fr Russell Square, beside the city’s Colbert railway station.

FAMILES believe there is also a need for an outlet for women going through the process of separation.

Secretary Joe Wallace explains, “Relationship breakdowns effect all family members. We try and take a holistic approach where everyone is taken care of with the emphasis on stopping the hurt and putting the children first.”

“We’ve operated a counselling service for the past two years and found that women have been more open to using this service. During a separation, men have to cope with being apart from their children and want to spend more time with them, while women can feel isolated and stressed over finances and everyday issues,” Mr Wallace explained.
