FORGET the Ice Bucket Challenge, Anti-Austerity Alliance councillor for Limerick City North, Cian Prendiville is spearheading a new craze whereby people will commit not to pay the water tax.
Cllr Prendiville is hoping the ‘AAA Irish Water Challenge’ will take off and even ripped up the Irish Water application form sent to his household this Monday at City Hall as a warning to Labour and Fine Gael that thousands of people are going to refuse to pay the water tax.
During a meeting of the Metropolitan District, Cllr Prendiville commented, “Irish Water do not have Revenue to do their dirty work, they cannot take this from people’s income. Therefore we have the ability to refuse to pay, and to build an active campaign to scrap this water tax.”
Hundreds of thousands simply cannot afford this charge, which will be €500 plus for many families,” he added.
The AAA has now initiated the ‘We Won’t Pay’ campaign, to try and organise that non-payment of the water charges “into a powerful movement”.
Cllr Prendiville’s party will be delivering a leaflet to every house in Limerick City over the coming weeks and organising public meetings to organise that campaign.
“We must remember, mass non-payment beat the water charges three times before: in Limerick, Waterford and in Dublin. We can beat them again,” Cllr Prendiville predicted.
He has now nominated AAA councillor Paul Keller, Kevin McNamara of the Kileely Residents Association and AAA activist and friend David Vallely to take the ‘AAA Irish Water Challenge’.
