Fighting Blindness launches Limerick support group

fightblindness_logo FIGHTING Blindness has announced the launch of a new support group in Limerick for people living with sight loss.

Meetings will be held monthly, with the inaugural meeting taking place on Thursday, September 18 at the Limerick Diocesan Pastoral Centre, St Michael’s Courtyard, Denmark Street from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

Fighting Blindness established the Insight Counselling Centre in 2002 to provide support and information for people and families affected by sight loss.

This is the third support group that the charity has set up through the centre, with others already in existence in Dublin and Cork.

The Limerick group is designed for people living with sight loss and will act as a meeting and discussion point for people to share their experiences and learn from one another.

Sessions will be hosted by a specially-trained facilitator, but the format will be open and responsive to the needs of the group, rather than following a formal structure.

Senior counselling manager at the Insight Counselling Centre, John Delany, said: “We have been facilitating support groups through Fighting Blindness for many years now and participants tell us that they find them to be very useful forums in which to share experiences and learn from each other in a safe, confidential and respectful setting.

“For anyone who may be experiencing sight loss, whether they have lived with a condition for many years, or have recently been diagnosed, we invite you to join us. You’ll be most welcome.”

Fighting Blindness represents more than 224,000 people in Ireland who are living with severe vision loss.

The charity offers counseling and support to people affected by sight loss while acting as advocates in issues of health policy.

The charity funds research in Ireland that is working towards the development of treatments and eventual cures for blindness.
