THEATRE at Savoy steps outside its monthly lunchbox to support two local festivals. For Elemental’s current Arts and Culture feast, it hosts ‘Macklin: Method and Madness’ next Sunday 14 at 8pm.
We are told: “This is a new comedy about the strolling player from Donegal who survived a murder charge to become a giant of the London stage.
It is February 1941 and London is being ravaged by The Blitz. In the basement of the BBC, a radio play is about to be broadcast to celebrate the life of the legendary 18th century actor, Charles Macklin [Donegal immigrant].
“Quarrelsome and hot tempered, Macklin was dogged by controversy including an infamous backstage killing”.
The show is written and performed by Gary Jermyn and Michael James Ford with a guest appearance by Simon Coury as The Producer.
€12 including glass of wine.
The Boneyard Man
The other feature is a new episode of Norma Lowney’s potboiler, ‘The Boneyard Man’. Again, it is Theatre at the Savoy but on this occasion for Culture Night, Friday 19 with a 7pm curtain.
Lowney is a Limerick based actress, producer and now event organiser. She was co-responsible for the Irish production – under Limerick Arts Encounter 2013 – of this Canadian detective series.
Kevin Kiely plays the bone-headed, credit hogging socialite whose adoring sidekick Marjorie (Karen Fitzgibbon) fills out his grey matter and investigations. Magic Roundabout’s Darren Maher rows in with his chameleon talent to play multiple others, as indeed do the other principals.
Reader, ‘The Boneyard Man’ is a riot, coldblooded and warm hearted all at once. Go see.
