Limerick councillors are left hanging on the line

telephone-handsetCOUNCILLORS are fuming that the phone rings but no one picks up when they try to contact Limerick Council officials.

At this month’s Adare-Rathkeale municipal district meeting, councillors claimed that phone message boxes are often full so they cannot leave voice messages for the people they’re looking for. They also alleged that sometimes after making several calls and sending emails, they still get no response.

“It’s not right that I have to make phone calls and can’t get through to the person I’m looking for because their message boxes are constantly full. It’s always the same bad apples and this has happened to me numerous times,” claimed Fianna Fail councillor Kevin Sheahan.

Fine Gael councillor Stephen Keary said he had the same experience and described the issue as “deplorable”.

“It’s always the same culprits. You could be waiting two weeks and they won’t return your calls or messages,” he said.

Independent councillor Emmett O’Brien said he had a similar experience.

“After making three phone calls and sending two emails I had to go in to talk to the person I was looking for. You have to respond to phone calls and emails, even just to say I got it and I’ll deal with it”, he added.

The Council’s district director Tom Gilligan said that there was an issue with messages boxes last month as Council staff worked to meet the Non Principal Private Residences (NPPR ) deadline of August 31. He promised to address the issue of message boxes at local authority offices.
