MINISTER for Justice Frances Fitzgerald has praised the Limerick Garda division for its fight against serious crime and in “keeping our citizens safe”.
Arriving at Roxboro Road Garda Station this Thursday morning, Minister Fitzgerald was greeted by Limerick’s most senior Gardai and Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Michael Sheehan and will receive an update on policing and developments in tackling serious crime.
Prior to the meeting, Minister Fitzgerald praised the community involvement of the Gardai adding that “opening up garda stations and creating community links is great. We are unique in Ireland in the way that community policing has developed over the years. I think that all community involvement is great.
“You have had very challenging times and very challenging tasks and you have certainly done a wonderful job and people really appreciate it and are aware of it all over the country,” added Minister Fitzgerald.
Chief Superintendent Dave Sheahan said that he hopes what has been built up here in Limerick and “the resilience now will show in the things we have done and going forward will change the whole fibre of Limerick”.
Mayor of Limerick Michael Sheehan noted the respect that people have for the Gardai in Limerick and hoped that when the Minister visits the 100 strong group of new garda recruits, that some would be sent to Limerick.
Minister Fitzgerald quipped in response that, “I hear what you are saying”.
