A GROUP of Mary Immaculate College students from Brazil travelled to Dublin this week to attend the Brazilian National Day celebrations hosted by Brazilian Ambassador Afonso Cardoso and his wife Solange Cardoso.
The four students – Paulo Oliveira, Antonio Frederico Nesti Lopes, Maurício Jardim and Victor Walzebruck – attended the event on Sunday, September 7 at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham with MIC director of international relations, Holly Cowman.
Paulo Oliveira, who is one of five Brazilian students at MIC in receipt of a prestigious Science without Borders Scholarship, awarded by the Brazilian Government, said attending the event was “a great honour”.
The five Brazilian students, who begin classes this week, will study various modules from the Physical Geography, Psychology, Mathematics and Media and Communication Studies strands of the BA (Liberal Arts) programme.
Ms Cowman commented: “This was my first time celebrating National Brazil Day and what a memorable way to do it. His Excellency, Ambassador Cardoso and Mrs Cardoso really made us feel so welcome. It was fantastic to experience Choro, Brazil’s oldest urban musical genre, in the beautiful surroundings of the Royal Hospital, particularly with our students, who are just a joy to be around.”
