THERE was a celebratory mood in Pallaskenry over the August Bank Holiday weekend as the community’s new playground was opened in splendid sunshine.
Families and children turned up in large numbers to mark the opening of the playground, which was built within the space of a week across the summer and is the culmination of three years of endeavour from the playground committee. The facility has a wide range of equipment for children up to 13 years of age, including slides, swings and climbing structures, as well as a zip wire.
The Pallaskenry playground was three years in the making, with the committee raising more than €38,000 in a concerted fundraising effort over the past 14 months. The project has also benefitted from West Limerick Resources grant aid to the tune of €103,000.
Committee chairperson Tara Hickson spoke of her delight at seeing how much the children enjoyed using the playground on its opening day and paid thanks to those who made the project possible.
She said: “It was absolutely fantastic and so rewarding to see the laughter and enjoyment in the playground this weekend. This project is testament to the hard work of the committee members, the support of so many people and of course the support of West Limerick Resources.”
The playground is open for the summer months daily from 9:30am to 9:30pm, with parking available at the community centre across the road. A formal opening ceremony is due to take place in the coming months. There is still some work to be completed in relation to ground works in the garden and the construction of the commemorative tile wall.
