A TRIO of Limerick men this week set off on a 16,000-mile journey from Limerick to Mongolia to raise money for the Mid West School for Hearing Impaired Children in Rosbrien.
The three – Kevin Power, Aran Power and Stephen Allen – began the first leg of their journey on Friday, July 18 as they left the school on their trusty Honda 125cc bikes.
Their chosen route will take them through 17 countries including Turkey, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
All three have more than ten years of motorcycle riding and maintenance experience and are travelling without any support vehicles.
The three men plan to sleep in a four-man tent for the entire six-week journey.
“In the last ten years I think 28 or 29 motorcycles have ever actually made it. A lot more have set out, but there’s a lot to go through,” explained Stephen Allen, whose sister Maria Allen is principal of the Mid West School for Hearing Impaired Children.
He continued: “There’s no set route, no backup, no support. A GPS would be no good to you once you get past Turkey. We’ll be going into Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and into Armenia and Azerbaijan. The roads there aren’t actually mapped out on a GPS so we’re going to be relying a lot on asking people.”
All funds raised will be donated to the school as the men are covering the cost of their own equipment and travel expenses.
They also plan to donate the three motorcycles to the Christina Noble Foundation when they eventually arrive at Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia.
