THE public have been invited to attend one or more of three anti-war demonstrations taking place at Shannon Airport and  in the city centre to show their opposition to Irish support, directly or indirectly, “for wars of aggression”.

The group Shannon Watch has organised the following agenda, beginning today, Friday 11:

Demonstration outside Limerick Prison from 5.15pm to 6pm in solidarity with peace activist Margaretta D’Arcy who has been imprisoned there again.

Ms D’Arcy, who received a visit from Mrs Sabrina Higgins whilst in Limerick prison for pacifist offences, is back because of her opposition to the US military use of Shannon.

“At 80 her peace activism is too much for the State to handle so they’ve locked her up again for 2 week,” is Shannwatch’s comment. “Meanwhile US / NATO torturers and war criminals are alowed to continue to use Shannon Airport”.

Tomorrow Saturday 12, a Vigil in Solidarity with Palestine will begin at 2pm on Thomas Street, Limerick, organised with the local branch of Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign and supported by Gaza Action Ireland, the Irish Anti-War Movement and Shannon Watch.

This vigil is concurrent with events taking place all over Ireland and the world, motivated by current strikes against Palestine by Israel that have murdered at least 80 Palestinians, 22 of them children.

“Palestinian human rights organisations are struggling to keep up with the numbers of casualties, and hospitals are having difficulty coping to treat people, especially with almost one third of essential medicines at zero stock,” Shannon Watch reports. “Entire families have been obliterated – the Al Kaware home was bombed the other day, eight people were killed, six of them children.

“Nine people were killed while watching the World Cup in a café [Wednesday 10 night], a journalist was killed while travelling in a clearly marked car, paramedics have been targeted”.

And on Sunday 13, a peace vigil at Shannon Airport will take place from 2pm – 3pm, open to all.
