LABOUR Party stalwart Tom Shortt believes that a new pedestrian crossing at the Treaty Stone on Clancy Strand, which he campaigned for during his time as a city councillor, has the potential to save lives.
The former City North councillor, who lost his seat in the recent local election, is confident that the dangerous junction will now be much safer thanks to his hard work in forcing the issue to the top of council agenda.
He insists that his approach to local politics has always been to get facilities and services installed to improve the quality of life at a local level. This goes back to when he campaigned for a city skatepark at Mount Kennett Place on the Dock Road in 2008.
However, the former Labour councillor feels he was given little credit by voters for this type of work, with their focus primarily on national issues such as cuts and charges.
“I am satisfied that I used my term as a councillor to advance numerous projects that will be delivered now,” he says.
Despite the lack of credit, he is determined to ensure that the projects he promoted are completed including the new youth centre at Thomond Park, paths to link Shannonvale on the Old Cratloe Road with Caherdavin and two housing projects in the Old Thomondgate area.
“Time will tell if the recently elected protest candidates and parties will deliver on their promises or if they will manage to switch from being anti-everything to achieving positive results for people on the ground,” he added.
