NEWLY elected councillor for City North, Frankie Daly, is supporting a call for the introduction of morning free parking in Limerick city centre on a trial basis.
Local businessman Michael Gleeson secured the Labour Party councillor’s backing for his suggestion that free parking could be introduced from 9.30am to 12 noon to increase footfall in the city, which has decreased by a crippling 50 per cent since 2009.
“When a person of Michael’s standing, with 50 years of trade experience, holds this view it is time to take serious note. I stand firm behind the introduction of free parking in Limerick for the months of July, August and September,” Cllr. Daly commented.
“We have a beautiful city, on par within anywhere else in Europe, so let’s encourage our own into its heart to support its business community, a community that, to be honest, is in drastic need of our support.
“For generations, Limerick City has given value for money to customers and that’s still the case today but the numbers of shoppers visiting the area has declined,” he said.
Cllr. Daly claims many Limerick businesses are now on “life support” and insists the entire sector is in desperate need of assistance.
“Limerick doesn’t need the go ahead from anywhere to offer free parking. Lets stand on our own two feet here and throw an aid to the business sector in the city. If we want a vibrant city, free parking is a viable proposition,” said the 27-year-old first-time council member.
