Sir Henry’s House Club Sweat celebrated

Deep 2WRITTEN and performed by Raymond Scannell, ‘Deep’  a one man performance with film and interviews celebrating the Ireland’s first House Club, based in Sir Henry’s, Cork. It’s set in the summer of 1988 where Cork’s emigration generation are following the beat in perfect time for a new music movement simmering from Ireland’s first house club ‘SWEAT@ Sir Henry’s’. Turning the tables on two decades, from the rise of Acid House to the Euro changeover, ‘Deep’ examines the evolution of Cork’s underground as it rises and falls through the eyes of a Vinyl Junkie.

Larry is growing up in a society slowly becoming disillusioned with Institutions. Henry’s dance floor evinced an unprejudiced cross-section of class, race, sex and creed. A sense of communion for those disenfranchised from the wider community, (remember the chants of ‘Every-bod-ay’ to the deep house basslines when Sir Henry’s was in full flight?). Looking back now, Larry wonders how much of it is remembered through smiley faced, rose tinted glasses?

Featuring footage of nights at the club and exclusive documentary interviews, Make A Move Festival presents Deep at 69 O’Connell Street, Thursday July 3.

Fancy a trip down memory lane. Here is some clips from a documentary on Sir Henry’s called ‘120bpm’ which premiered at the 52nd Cork Film Festival in 2007.
