Making The Cut celebrates Limerick’s cutting edge

A MUSIC based event recognising the “rich, but often understated legacy of youth and non-conformity” in Limerick is how visual artist Paul Tarpey describes his project for EVA 2014 happening this weekend.

The event, from 6.30pm in the former Red Cross Hall on 36 Cecil Street, will link veterans of the cities 1960’s beat music scene, ex members of Grannies Intentions, with today’s youth to celebrate Limerick’s legacy of teen rebelliousness and creativity.

Every Limerick generation has had its non-conformist counter culture: mods, rockers, Cure heads, ravers, bikers, b-boys, hip hop heads and metallers. They all have their space to celebrate their creativity and rebelliousness and according to Paul Tarpey, “In the Sixties, 36 Cecil St Space was that space.”

The 90 minute performance will feature The Cha Haran Band (ex Grannies Intentions) with guest Brush Shields. Performing alongside these 1960’s veterans will be participants from both the Music Generation project and Limerick Youth Services. A new sound composition created by DJ Deviant will feature, graffiti from the 1960’s will be recreated, film projections will be screened on the venue’s walls.

‘Making The Cut’ salutes the impact 1960’s imported alternative press had for some on the Limerick scene by producing an edition of its own newspaper, which will be available on the night.
