NEWLY elected Sinn Féin councillor Malachy McCreesh insists that the people of Limerick sent a very clear message to the government on local election day, communicating that they are “not prepared to accept any further hardship”.
The Limerick City West councillor is now calling on all local and national representatives to keep pressure on the government in order to force them to change direction on how the financial burden of the economy crisis can be shared fairly across all members of society.
“By shifting the focus to the issue of medical card removal from the most vulnerable in society, the government are hoping to ignore the direct message that was sent by the voters,” said Cllr McCreesh.
“The people of Limerick are not prepared to accept any further cuts, either directly from their income or from reduction in services,” he warned.
Cllr McCreesh, while welcoming the halt to the process of removing medical cards, pointed out that this action does not help the thousands who have already lost their cards. He maintains that it is time to target the rich and powerful in our society and force them to pay their fair share rather than allow the financial burden to continue to be placed on the shoulders of those families already on the edge.
“Don’t allow this Government to divert the anger of the whole country to the current austerity measures by accepting a few minor changes that will be portrayed by Ministers as a worthy response to the message that was sent by the people of Limerick,” he concluded.
