Interview by Síona Carroll

DON Wycherly, screenwriter and established actor with roles in ‘Veronica Guerin’, ‘Ballykissangel’ and ‘Bachelors Walk’, is coming to Limerick in the rollercoaster one-man show, ‘After Sarah Miles.’

Arts page caught up  with him for the inside story.

Written and directed by Kerryman, Micheal Hillard Mulcahy, ‘After Sarah Miles’ tells the story of a fisherman and his struggles faced throughout life. There is an element of truth to the play as Hillard Mulcahy plumbs his own experiences such as the story of a storm he was told by a passing fisherman, and the “beautiful English hippie” who swam naked with Fungi the dolphin.

The play covers a range of relatable themes such as love, friendship and loss which are dealt with in a good-humoured way. Alcohol features heavily as it leads to some disastrous relationships.

Set in Dingle, Don Wycherly plays Bobeen, a nickname revealed in the first scene as he recalls life from the perspective of his 14 year-old self.

Wycherly says: “We all go on a comical and intense journey of Bobeen’s life. I think the audience are struck by how intense and moving this play is. A woman described it perfectly to me by saying there are times when you want to kick him and then there are times you just want to hug him.”

‘After Sarah Miles’ is in Limerick for a night only at 69 O’Connell Street on Wednesday May 14, 8pm. Tickets from Lime Tree Theatre box office, www.limetreetheatre.ie
