THE son of former Mayor of Limerick Clem Casey is set to run as an independent candidate for City West in the local election this month.
Gerry Casey, who captained the Young Munster team in 1986 and was centenary president of the club in 1996, also played at senior level with Munster in the early eighties. He now works as a sales executive with Limerick’s Live 95FM.
“I have spent a long time considering my intention to stand and have not taken this decision lightly. I see the amalgamation of both the City and County Councils as a huge step forward and a significant factor in my decision.
“I am familiar with the workings of local politics and I realise there are difficulties in what I’d like to achieve for Limerick. However, I’m fully dedicated to serve the people of Limerick and would regard it as an honour. My late father Clem loved Limerick and it was a privilege for him to serve the city for over 30 years with his greatest achievement in becoming Mayor of the City in 1980,” he said.
While he would like to be able to make promises about providing more hospital beds, more school places and more factories, he believes that honesty is the best policy and is aware of the restrictions facing local councillors.
“I would rather be honest with the electorate of Limerick. What I can say is, that if people have a local issue that is important to them, then I know I would be the first port of call to represent them with honesty and integrity and total commitment,” he said.
