Making a Limerick freeman of the President

WITH Michael D Higgins entering the history books this week as the first Irish head of state to visit the UK, Labour councillor Tom Shortt believes the time is right to confer the Freedom of the City on the Limerick-born President.

Cllr Shortt, who was Limerick director of elections for President Higgins during the Presidential election in 2011, thinks it would be a positive move to confer the Freedom of the City on the Irish President.

“The cross-party support was not there on the outgoing Fine Gael dominated Council. However, I am optimistic, that the new Council will take a fresh look at this idea, as there is enough evidence that the people of Limerick would support the move,” he said.
