SENIOR management at Limerick County Council’s planning department came in for severe criticism over their failure to attend an electoral area meeting at County Hall last Tuesday.

Accusing them of showing a “lack of respect” towards the Adare electoral area committee, Fianna Fáil councillor James Collins said it was vital that the senior planners attended this week’s meeting to discuss developments with the 200-acre site at Mungret College and the proposed neighbourhood park for Dooradoyle.

“They turn up once every five or six meetings and I would be critical of the respect they show. There’s no one here from planning again.

“There are important issues that need to be addressed and I assumed that there would be someone here from the planning department so we can put our questions to them,” Cllr Collins commented.

“Lots of money was spent on the Caher Road in Mungret and the works have failed. It was washed away. The planning department has a director of services but there’s no one here to resolve these issues,” said the Limerick City West councillor.

A council official told the meeting that a call had been received from the planning department during this Tuesday’s meeting to explain that they were unable to attend.

Cllr Leo Walsh (FG) proposed that a member of the planning department attend the final Adare electoral area committee meeting on May 6 ahead of the local elections and the formal amalgamation of the city and county councils.

Cllr Daniel Butler (FG) commented, “The planning department are not here to defend themselves but in my experience they have always been quick to respond and very amenable whenever I’ve called them on an issue.”

“A meeting was held last Friday regarding plans for the playground in Dooradoyle,” he told Cllr Collins.
