A YOUNG toddler who took a wander in the early hours of last Wednesday morning had a lucky escape when a 21-year-old man who was making his way home found him walking unaccompanied near the main Dublin Road.
The two and a half year old boy had climbed out of his cot, walked out the front door and left his home off the Dublin Road shortly after 2am while his mother slept in her bed completely unaware of her little son’s meanderings.
Exploring his surroundings, the little boy, who will turn three later this summer, was found walking on the footpath near the main Limerick to Dublin road by a young man who turned out to be a late night hero.
Alerting the gardai after being unable to ascertain where the young explorer had emerged from, the man waited with the boy until a patrol car from Henry Street garda station arrived.
The little boy was brought back to the station while a search for his home and mother took place.
Gardai found a front door wide open in a nearby estate and it was established that the boy’s 26-year-old mother was still asleep inside unaware of what had unfolded.
Thankfully, mother and toddler were reunited without any harm and the 21-year-old man has been heavily praised for his decisive action in ensuring the safety of the wandering toddler.
Gardai are now looking to find the young hero so he can be properly thanked by all concerned.
