INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day was celebrated in the city at the weekend with one local election candidate seizing the opportunity to use a coffee morning as “a genuine chance for action”.
Labour hopeful for Limerick East, Elena Secas, hosted a special event at The Hurler Pub in Castletroy last Saturday to mark International Women’s Day, a date that was also celebrated worldwide. Originally from Moldova, Elena described the event as a celebration of respect and appreciation towards women.
“I think it is also a great opportunity to commemorate all women around the world for their achievements and successes in every aspect of their lives, be it community, politics, economy etc,” said Ms Secas.
“International Women’s Day offers a genuine chance for action. Women are massively underrepresented in politics. Currently only 16 per cent of councillors and 16 per cent of our TDs are female – this has to change. We always speak about what needs to be done in order to get more women into politics and what a positive difference it will make, but now’s the time to stop talking the talk and walk the walk,” the Castletroy-based community activist declared.
This May Ms Secas will contest for a seat in the new Limerick City East area which now covers an area from Castleconnell through Annacotty, Castletroy, Garryowen into the city centre. Elena is the only female Labour Party candidate in all of Limerick City and County.
“I also think that the International Women’s Day is a call for change if we look back at the history of the Day. By marking it I commit to bring change to my community, to be the real change we all want,” she concluded.
