RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and Swedish virtuoso trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger perform at University Concert Hall, Limerick on Wednesday March 12 as part of a three-stop tour.
RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra (RNSO) is showcasing Hardenberger as soloist and director in a programme ranging from 18th century Haydn through to Joni Mitchell.
Hardenberger has been described as ‘the best trumpet player in the galaxy’ by the London Times.
“He is acclaimed for his performances of the classical repertory and lauded as a pioneer of cutting-edge new trumpet works,” the orchestra’s Assumpta Lawless tells us. Along with Haydn, and Mitchell’s, “he will conduct Prokofiev’s ‘Classical’ symphony, an exhilarating homage to Haydn and Mozart and Ravel’s ‘Le tombeau de Couperin’, an elegant and elegiac tribute to friends killed in battle”.
“Two modern marvels bring the programme up to date, Planel’s tuneful and atmospheric ‘Concerto for Trumpet and String Orchestra’, and ‘Both Sides Now’, Mitchell’s anthemic love song in a mellow and moody new arrangement for trumpet and string orchestra by Roland Pöntinen”.
This season, young genius Hakan Hardenberger is booked to conduct St Paul Chamber Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Real Filharmonia Galicia, Tampere Philharmonic and the Malmö Symphony. Buy tickets for his Limerick programme at www.uch.ie and at box office.
