FOYNES and District Search and Rescue (FDSAR) have received funding of €6,500 from ESB’s charitable fund — Electric Aid Ireland.
Established in 2009, the search and rescue unit currently covers 10 miles in each direction from Foynes Port on the Limerick and Clare shorelines, taking in both Shannon Airport and Tarbert as part of its area of operations.
Foynes is home to the biggest sailing club on the Shannon Estuary, but FDSAR volunteers also provide a back-up service for other local search and rescue teams in the region when called upon.
The highly trained voluntary organisation this week welcomed funding from Electric Aid Ireland to purchase new rescue equipment and safety gear. FDSAR also thanked the local community for its continued support.
“Without the generosity of the local people and surrounding districts we would find it hard to continue to operate,” said David O’Connell of the search and rescue unit.
Those interested in volunteering with the Foynes and District Search and Rescue should log onto its facebook page for more details.
“We are looking for people willing to volunteer their time towards helping the public through the work of the rescue unit. Being part of a rescue crew is a major commitment. It’s not for everyone but there is a great sense of satisfaction when you help people,” Mr O’Connell concluded.
