A LIMERICK garden, which won a national competition and took silver at the prestigious โ€˜Bloomโ€ festival in Dublin will be the focus of an RTE production this Thursday evening.

Designer, Lisa Mc Knight won the โ€˜Supergardenโ€™ competition run by RTE for her transformation of a private garden in Rhebogue. She later took the design to โ€˜Bloomโ€™ where she recreated it to win a silver against stiff competition from some of the best designers in the land.

Lisa, who opened her first professional design company in Limerick, also designed the playground in the Peopleโ€™s Park and is responsible for the unusual playground in Cratloe woods.

Lisa describes her award-winning Rhebogue design as โ€œromantic ย and appealing to the sensesโ€.

She told the Limerick Post that she wanted to design a garden which had wide appeal and which would sit well in an Irish situation.

โ€œI sank a feeding trough into the ground and created a water feature. Planting was with a view to scent, being nice to touch or attracting birds and bees โ€“ I wanted t appeal to all the senses and I wanted to appeal to all ages. I hung a swing with a beautiful wood seat and climbing ropes in an existing Laburnum tree because it doesnโ€™t matter what age a person is โ€“ everyone wants to sit on a swingโ€.

The competition was run by RTE and sponsored by Woodies, who asked their customers to volunteer their gardens for the makeover, which had to be done on a budget of โ‚ฌ5,000.

โ€œI had Bloom in my sights when I created the garden and I was delighted to take silver. I was up against some of the best garden designers in the country. It was also a great opportunity to showcase wonderful Limerick crafts for the people who worked on the project with meโ€.

The episode of Supergarden screens on RTE 1 at 8.30 this Thursday, March 6.
