CITY and County Council members have praised the Great Limerick Run for putting the Mid-West region well and truly on the map.
In a presentation to members of the two local authorities’ Cultural and Sporting committees, city councillor and event co-organiser Joe Leddin announced that the sporting event was listed in Failte Ireland’s ‘top 20 national events’ and continues to go from strength to strength.
“It’s all about promoting Limerick,” he said.
“We had participants from all 32 counties and 23 countries attended in 2013. Last year 11,200 people participated, up 30 per cent from 2012. We also have a target of 12,000 for this year,” he explained.
Cllr Michael Hourigan (FG) praised the organisers of the Great Limerick Run.
“Little did we know when it started that this would evolve into such a big event. It’s a huge source of income for the region generating €3.5 million for the local economy,” said Cllr Hourigan.
County councillor Kevin Sheahan (FF) congratulated Cllr Leddin on the success of the Great Limerick Run. While, county councillor David Moloney (Lab) hailed the May bank holiday event as “a great success story”.
“We never hear bad stories, it’s been a fantastic success that speaks for itself. The organisers are continually making improvements and creating positivity. Long may it continue,” said Cllr Moloney.
City councillor Cormac Hurley (FG) described the Great Limerick Run as a “great occasion”.
County councillor Francis Foley (FF) commented, “It is an excellent event that has created a hugely positive image of the city. Well done to all involved.”
