LIMERICK County Council’s commitment to provide new schools and a public park on the 200-acre site around Mungret College has been backed up by an initial funding allocation from the local authority.
Last week Limerick County Council announced that it had purchased the site for educational and recreational use and funding of €180,000 has now been allocated from the development fund towards the development of a public park.
Local Fianna Fail councillor James Collins, who has campaigned for these facilities for several years, welcomed the initial round of funding that was announced at Monday 24’s monthly council meeting.
“The provision of schools and a park are the biggest issues in Raheen, Dooradoyle and Mungret. I am delighted that a suitable site has now been secured for a local park and schools campus at Mungret College. We have earmarked these sites for the establishment of a new campus incorporating a neighbourhood park and new schools,” Cllr Collins announced.
“The Part 8 planning process is due to happen in April and I would urge local community groups to participate and have their say. This is positive news for the local communities as we now plan to have a neighbourhood park similar to the park in Casteltroy,” he said.
A further €125,000 was also allocated by Limerick County Council to facilitate a distributor road to open up school sites and development lands at Mungret.
“Some local primary schools have been in temporary prefabs for some time. We have provided the sites and it is now up to the Department of Education to provide them with new schools buildings at Mungret College.
“In addition to these facilities, I am continuing my campaign for the provision of a new secondary school for the Raheen, Dooradoyle and Mungret area.
“I am now calling on the Minister for Education to sanction a new secondary school for the area immediately,” Cllr Collins stated.
“Ancillary facilities such as cycle lanes and footpaths will be put in place so that these new facilities can be accessed safely,” he concluded.
