THERE were 45 patients on trolleys at the University Hospital Limerick this Wednesday as the Emergency Department struggled to cope with a huge influx of patients.
The HSE west has been blaming a seasonal peak because of the ‘flu virus for the large numbers and long waiting times.
A HSE spokesperson reminded patients that they should only go to the ED in cases of genuine emergency.
But the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) says the problem is down to lack of frontline staff and is warning that conditions have reached danger point in the ED.
