TRUCKLOADS of furniture arrived at St Mary’s Park this week as local businesses joined in the effort to help the victims of the worst floods the area has seen in generations.
On Tuesday, a delivery of 20 beds and 30 three-piece suites arrived in four trucks from Careline Moving and Storage, one of the country’s largest removal companies.
Star Rovers Football club had been the central hub for the already huge amount of donations of relief aid made to the residents, but little prepared them for the latest arrival.
It’s the latest in a series of major donations given to the flood victims.
“It was furniture left in storage by people who have moved abroad and don’t have any need for it anymore,” explained Pat Carey of Careline furniture removal, which has been in business for over 100 years and is now in its fifth generation.
“We met as a family and decided to contact our depots in Dublin and Cork and see what they had in their warehouses and we sent trucks up to collect the furniture. It’s so sad really to see how so many people have suffered but at least this might help them out.”
EZ Living Furniture of Tipperary Road and City East Retail Park, Limerick rallied behind the efforts of the St Mary’s Aid Flood Relief campaign by donating a number of sofas to those worst affected by tidal floods.
Pat O’Sullivan, of Limerick FC and Galtee Fuels in Askeaton said they have delivered and packed 100 tonnes of sand free for distribution to areas at risk of flooding, along with five tonnes of coal to warm people’s houses.
“These are our own people and we should all be in this together. What’s going on here is deprivation, and as a community we should be helping each other as much as we possibly can. We’re trying to make sure the fuel goes to the right people. There’s nobody going to be left short.”
Donations can be made by cheque, payable to St. Mary’s Parish – Flood Relief Fund and given to local parishes who will forward it to St Mary’s Parish. Alternatively, they can post cheque to St Mary’s Presbytery, Athlunkard Street, Limerick.
People can also donate through their bank to the relief fund account at the Allied Irish Bank, Raheen, Account No. 82611088, Sort Code 93:52:47.
