HOUSES flooded and destroyed in St Mary’s Park last weekend will not be rebuilt or refurbished according to The Minister for Social Protection.
Minister Joan Burton was in Limerick’s St Mary’s Park one week after the devastating floods of that came during Storm Brigid.
During her walkabout with fellow Labour colleague, Minister Jan O’Sullivan, Minister Burton heard from and saw first hand the families displaced in its wake.
She said that the house would not be refurnished as they were built on a flood plain.
Over 250 people from the area have sought urgent financial aid from the department of social protection
Houses earmarked for demolition on St Munchin’s St in St Mary’s Park as part of the Limerick Regeneration plan will not be rebuilt as they are directly in the flood plane.
Minister Burton said: “In terms of a house which became entirely uninhabitable, we would liaise with the OPW, as well as the local authority, because it really might make no sense to rebuild on that particular spot.”
She added that the decisions taken by locals would take some time given people’s desires to remain in their home place.
