USE your airport – that was the message from Shannon Group chief executive Neil Pakey as Aer Lingus launched their daily, year-round service to Boston.
And selling the routes available at Shannon will be the main priority over the coming months, according to Mr Pakey.
“We’ll be working hard on marketing the services from Shannon as well as talking to the airlines about what will happen next. But if we fill the routes we have it will speak for itself,” he told the Limerick Post.
And he said that while the 60 per cent inward transatlantic traffic would be a great boost for tourism in the region, it was important that the route would be used from both sides.
“If anyone is thinking of using another airport when we have all these routes from Shannon, then we would say think again,” he said.
There were pancakes and a party atmosphere at the departures gate as the crew prepared for the first flight out to Boston.
A six-times weekly, year-round JFK New York service from March will make this the first time the airline has offered a year-round service from Shannon since 2009.
Aer Lingus Chief Executive, Christoph Mueller said it was a significant day for Aer Lingus and their team at Shannon as it marked the beginning of their transatlantic expansion.
The Boston flight was another first at Shannon as it marked Aer Lingus’ inaugural commercial transatlantic flight with the Boeing B757 aircraft. The smaller plane cuts fuel costs and can make the journey in six hours.
