THE Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council was nominated to the City of Culture Board by council members at County Hall this Monday.
At their monthly meeting, councillors supported the nomination of Cllr John Sheahan (FG) and also proposed a second nominee from its members be elected to the board.
Cllr Liam Galvin (FG), proposing the nomination of Cllr Sheahan, commented, “City of Culture had bad publicity in the early days. It needs people like your good self; someone with vision to take the mantle and make decisions that represent this local authority.”
Cllr Michael Collins (FF) proposed that Cllr Galvin’s motion be amended to include two council members on the City of Culture Board. According to Cllr Collins this would ensure “cross party representation” and bring some balance to proceedings. Cllr James Collins (FF) seconded his party colleague’s proposal.
Cllr Damien Riedy (FG) said with the Mayor representing the city on the City of Culture Board, it was only fitting that the Cathaoirleach represented the county.
Cllr Eddie Ryan (FF) also supported the Cathaoirleach’s nomination, but remarked that he wouldn’t have any time for canvassing in forthcoming the local elections.
Cllr Brigid Teefy (Ind) also supported Cllr Sheahan’s nomination but said it was only proper to have a second County Council member on the Board.
County Manager Conn Murray said he would look into their request for a second member to be nominated.
