RADICAL reform of second level education in Limerick has been called for after the announcement that Scoil Carmel is set to close its doors in 2016.
The board of management of the long-established O’Connell Avenue secondary school have cited demographic changes and the economic downturn for its closure.
Salesian Secondary School, Fernbank announced last October that it is to merge with St Nessan’s in 2015.
City councillor Tom Shortt, an art teacher at Scoil Carmel for 32 years, commented: “At a time when the council is working to bring education back into the city centre, it runs directly contrary to that policy to see historically vibrant schools closing.”
