Shannon Airport management has welcomed the announcement of a ninth new Ryanair route for its 2014 summer season after the airline confirmed it will operate twice weekly to Poitiers in west central France.

The new destination, which will commence on April 4, and adds to Ryanairโ€™s eight other new routes โ€“ to Berlin, Paris, Fuerteventura, Warsaw, Faro, Munich, Nice and Krakow โ€“ which were announced in late October for the 2014 summer season at Shannon. This is also the first time that the popular French city has been on the Shannon schedule.

Poitiers, a hilltop city with good access to both the north and west coasts, is recognised as one of Franceโ€™s most charming inland destinations. It is steeped in history and home to one of the most famous churches in all of France, the Notre-Dame-la-Grande.

It also boasts one of the continentโ€™s best known and most popular theme parks, Futuroscope, which attracts close to 2 million visitors annually.

Shannon CEO Neil Pakey said, โ€œThis is another excellent addition to Shannonโ€™s summer schedule by Ryanair. We now have nine new Ryanair routes this summer across continental Europe, which really strengthens outbound options from Shannon this year.

โ€œIt is also a huge opportunity for tourism interests across this region as these new routes also connect us with markets that have a very strong demand for the unique Irish tourism product available on this side of the country.โ€

Ryanairโ€™s Maria Macken said the new service would operate twice weekly on Mondays and Friday from April 4. The Poitiers route will go on sale on www.ryanair.com tomorrow with fares starting from โ‚ฌ27.99.
