Teenager accused of endangering life of community garda

A 17-YEAR-old Limerick teenager has denied driving a stolen car in the direction of a female community policing garda in the Southill area of the city over 18 months ago and thus endangering her life.

The teenager, who can not be named for legal reasons, has an address in Limerick City and is charged with the alleged endangerment of Roxboro Road garda Niamh Keogh, on May 23, 2012 where by he “intentionally or recklessly engaged in conduct which created a substantial risk of death or serious harm to another.”

The charge is contrary to section 13 of the non fatal offences against he person act 1997.

John O’Sullivan, prosecution counsel for the State, outlined that the accused teenager unlawfully used a stolen red Mazda car on the afternoon of May 23, 2012 and drove it in the direction of the garda in the O’Malley Park area of Southill and thus endangering her life. The car had been previously stolen from the Limerick Enterprise Development Park.

The accused, when arraigned before Judge Carroll Moran at Limerick Circuit Court, entered a plea of not guilty and a jury of eight women and four men were empanelled for the trial expected to last three days.
