Limerick Lakers basketball teams compete in the Cork league and enjoy the level of challenge that the competition brings to basketball. Our teams at all age groups have benefited from taking part in the league, cup and underage tournaments. This week for the first time in the club history a Limerick Lakers team took the silver in the Cork Cup and brought the Cork Cup to Limerick.
The u20 team travelled to Cork last Tuesday night for an away game in the final. The Limerick team came in as underdogs haven been to finals a number of times and losing out in the big matches, usually to Neptune. This under 20 team have been together since they started playing at u 8 level. They have had some successes over the years and have played in overseas tournaments in the US and Poland. Their experience, grit and determination meant that they dug deep when it was needed in this hard fought battle. Lakers were behind on the score board by 10 points at the end of the first quarter, each successive quarter they narrowed the margins. They went into the last quarter trailing by just 5 points. The team showed tremendous spirit and with six seconds on the clock they were one point ahead. Then Jamie McAuliffe stepped up to take a free throw. His scores sealed the game and a win by 3 points.
